• AR stands for Accelerated Reader. Please encourage your child to read books at their level and continue choosing books that interest them. They take a Star reading test that determines their reading level. For example they may have a range of 3.8-5.5. This means a good fit book for your child is near the end of a third grade level up to the middle of fifth grade level.

Reading aloud to your child is a great way for them to hear what fluent reading sounds like. Taking turns reading with them is a great way to spend time with your child and you can discuss what is being read to check for understanding. Or you can just listen to them read aloud. Prompt your child to use clues from the text to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words. Teach them to look up words they are still uncertain about to increase their vocabulary. And finally ask questions about books they are reading to help them with their comprehension of stories. Please encourage your child to read 20 minutes at home daily Mon.-Fri. They will have a set point goal each nine weeks that they will be working towards.

Some topics we are covering this year include:

    Point of view

    Figurative language

    Comparing/contrasting characters/settings
