2019 Volunteer of the Year
Each school selects an outstanding volunteer as the Volunteer of the Year, then he or she is eligible for the district's Volunteer of the Year recognition. A committee, comprised of community leadership, reviews and selects the districtwide Volunteer of the Year. The winner is announced at the Caldwell County Schools Education in Excellence Awards and Reception, sponsored in part by Blue Ridge Energy.
Congratulations to Deborah (Debbie) Henson, the 2019 Caldwell County Schools Volunteer of the Year! Henson, the outstanding volunteer representing Happy Valley School received the VOY award in its 24th consecutive year at the districtwide end-of-the-year awards ceremony and celebration!
This volunteer goes beyond the call.
She understands the quality and quantity of work contributed by volunteers because she was once an educator in the Caldwell County Schools.
As a retired teacher, she is now a substitute teacher who first volunteered in a classroom to become more familiar with the subject area. Then she continued volunteering in the class as a math tutor, helping with lesson plans, and providing continuity for the students until the assigned classroom teacher returned. She also assists the school with bus duty and sports games. But she’s no stranger to volunteerism. For the past 10 years, she has volunteered with the Hibriten High School Band program and also served as a volunteer for Communities in Schools.
As someone whose career has been in the classroom, she works with several schools and programs providing students with extra support. She wants them to know that someone cares for them.
She takes on extra duties for teachers and staff, knowing there’s just not enough time in the day to do it all.
The 2019 Volunteer of the Year in loving memory of Lorraine S. Mummert, fondly called Ms. Mumm, who volunteered in the schools for 14 years until the age of 94.
In the same spirit of teamwork, trust, dedication, and heart. . .
The 2019 Volunteer of the Year is Deborah (Debbie) Henson, Outstanding Volunteer from Happy Valley School!
