    Happy President’s Day

     

    SAT word of the day is glaucoma (glaw KOE muh)The meaning of glaucoma is a disease of the ocular (eye) system, increased pressure on the eyeball, causing damage.  Example: President Bush was found to have ''an early glaucoma of his left eye'' in a routine physical examination in 1990.

    If you are interested in going on a fieldtrip to App Ski Mountain to ski or snowboard, join us next Friday.  The cost is only $30 for a lesson, a lift ticket, and rentals.  See Mr. Waycaster in Room 303 in the Math Department for more information. The first 40 to pay may go!

    If you’re planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college, consider attending the Blue Ridge Energy Leadership Track Summit. This event takes place on March 10th, and aims to expose students to college bound essentials such as SAT/ACT prep, financial aid information, college essay writing, and more. If you’re interested in signing up or getting more information, please see your counselor!

    The Austin Roberts Memorial Scholarship - For students in the NROTC program, but can be open to anyone else who is interested. Due March 1.


    Caldwell County Farm Bureau Scholarship - For students interested in attending a 2 or 4 year college. Preference is given to Farm Bureau members. Due March

    Sports:

    Congratulations to Devin Bumgarner, Freddy Guardiola, and Easton Griffin all qualified for the state wrestling tournament! Easton finished 3rd while Devin and Freddy finished 4th .They will be wrestling in Greensboro starting this Thursday. Everyone tell them good job, it is a huge accomplishment!

     

    Anyone interested in running track needs to meet in the Media Center at 3pm on Wednesday, February 14.  In order to be eligible you must have a valid physical and have passed 3 out of 4 classes last semester. The meeting will last until about 4pm. If you are unable to attend, you can see Coach Ramsey in the Social Studies Department to get information.

     

    Golf practice begins Wednesday, Feb. 14th.

    Practice will begin in the art room at 3:00

    West AFS wants to welcome our visiting exchange students to Winter Weekend! Be sure and say hello to Loris from Switzerland, Lili from Japan, Laura from Turkey, and Nermine (ne'er-Meen) from Tunisia, South Africa.

    Any student who wants to buy a $10 Bo's unlimited ticket, please purchase yours from an AFS leader or from Mr. Smith in Room 324 by the end of the day. Bo's night is TONIGHT from 6-10 PM."

    Student Information: 

    AFS members who are attending Caldwell County Winter Weekend events, please reserve your spot through the Facebook site or sign up with Mr. Smith. You may also pre-pay for snow tubing.

    Any student who wants to hang out with AFS exchange students next Friday, February 9th at Bo's from 6-10, please buy a ticket from an AFS leader or Mr. Smith in room 324. $10 gets you 4 hours of unlimited access and a chance to add some cool international citizens to your group of friends.

    Beta invitations are being emailed to students who have a GPA of 3.5 or higher who are not already in Beta. Eligible students should check their email for the invitation.  Dues for students joining in the spring must be paid by the next club meeting March 7th. Any students who do not receive an invitation, but feel like they should have received an invitation should see the appropriate sponsor. 9th grade -Mrs. T. Taylor, 10th grade Mrs. Hatton, 11th (Mrs. Kimberlin) and 12th (Mrs. King-Farthing).
