Beginning Teachers Embark on New School Year
Beginning teachers are participating in a three-day orientation this week that will prepare first, second and third year teachers to fully embark on a career in education with more awareness, tools and resources needed to successfully start the new school year.
“The ultimate goal of the Beginning Teacher Support Program is to grow and nurture the development of beginning teachers so that they can reach their full potential in providing a quality education to students in Caldwell County,” said Teacher Mentor and National Board Coordinator Heather Puhl.
The orientation includes an overview of districtwide services, presentations on educational programs, classroom management tips, introductions to community resources and grant opportunities, as well as a self-assessment and review of North Carolina teaching standards.
“During orientation, the mentor team teaches beginning teachers about the Marigold Effect, which highlights the importance of finding positive people who can provide motivation and encouragement throughout the year,” Puhl said. “We hope to serve as marigolds for these new teachers just as they will serve as positive influences for the students and colleagues that they will work with each day.”
Nearly 40 beginning teachers registered for the orientation planned and organized by teacher mentors Heather Puhl, Nancy Phipps and Denise Allen. Approximately 670 full-time teachers are employed in the Caldwell County Schools.
