Wilson Named New EC Director

At the Board of Education meeting on Jan. 8, Heather Wilson was approved as the new Exceptional Children’s (EC) Director. Wilson, a proven leader in special education and related services, comes to Caldwell County Schools from her most recent position as Assistant EC Director of Catawba County School System.
Wilson brings a wealth of EC experience as she has held administrative and classroom positions since 2009, serving as a teacher, program specialist, coordinator, and assistant director.
“We are confident that she will play a pivotal role in advancing our commitment to excellence and inclusivity in education,” said Superintendent Dr. Don Phipps. “She will be an invaluable asset to our Exceptional Children’s Department and will positively impact the lives of our exceptional students.”
Wilson will take over from interim EC Director Robyn Helton, who has been in place since the summer. The prior EC Director, Travis Gillespie, took a position in Watauga County Schools as principal of Hardin Park Elementary in Boone, where he resides.
Wilson completed a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk and a Master of Arts in Administration from Western Carolina University. She is expected to begin her new duties on February 19, 2024.
